I guess I got too much heat in the brakes yesterday.

Because now I feel a slight vibration, and my ABS light is on, probably due to melting the wiring for a wheel speed sensor. Flat-face steelies are not your friends for canyon runs. Time to get underneath to survey the damage and see what needs to be replaced before my trip.

It’s not the heat that warps rotors. It’s the cornering forces moving the caliper and pads around causing uneven wear.

Slotted rotors just give more initial bite. Drilled rotors theoretically cool the rotors because there is more surface area. But there’s also less material and they can develop cracks.

True, although I have melted through a speed sensor harness due to heat before, so I’m guessing that’s the main culprit behind my ABS light.

As somebody who has been racing cars for the past 20 years, I agree with every point he makes. For this conversation, namely points one and two.

Rotors don’t actually warp. It’s uneven heating and pad material being deposited on the pad that makes it “feel” warped. Excessive heat and poor pad break-in will cause these spots.

Drilled rotors were developed to help with outgassing on old, asbestos pads. Modern pads don’t have that issue so cross-drilling is pointless. Slots don’t actually increase initial bite, only pad compounds affect that. Slots can help with clearing out dust, but not enough that you would notice on a street car (even one ran hard). All you really notice is a slight vibration in the pedal.

No duh, it’s over 18 lbs of cast iron, it’s pretty hard to actually “warp” that. Unfortunately, there isn’t an easier way of saying “something’s fucky, I’m feeling a light shimmy in the pedal under light application” so warped it is.
